23-06-2007  Businessman says few Russian markets interested in nanotechnology
One of Russia’s biggest problems at the moment is the scarcity of markets interested in the development of nanotechnology and nano-industries, believes businessman Mikhail Prokhorov, the president of Onexim Group, a co-owner of Interros Group and former director general of OAO Norilsk Nickel.
Prokhorov, who took part in a meeting of the governmental commission for nanotechnology, told reporters he got down to working on hydrogen energy problems several years ago.
“I started working on those projects in 2003 and I plan to continue promoting them in the future,” he said.
“Russia’s biggest problem is that very few markets here have interest in nano-industries,” Prokhorov said. “We’re lagging behind others in that field and hence the need for creating new materials.”
“I’m sure we’ll gather or even buy out Western research /in nanotechnology/ and accumulate it is this country so as to be able to create our authentic industry of nanotechnologies,” he said.
“This type of technologies will help Russia get off the needle of oil and gas exports,” Prokhorov went on saying.
He stressed the importance of the governmental commission for nanotechnologies, saying: “It’ll get engaged in building a chain of structural elements needed for obtaining the necessary results.”
Prokhorov also said he has no plans for seeking a seat on the board of directors in Norilsk Nickel.
He made a reservation on it, though, saying: “If I want it, I myself or my representative may call an early meeting of shareholders.”
Prokhorov denied reports on alleged intentions on the part of Norilsk Nickel to sell a stake to the major aluminum producer, Rusal, as well as reports on a possible sale of Polus-zoloto gold producing company to the diamond-producing corporation ALROSA.
